MARCH 2026 E-NEWS THMCH LECTURE ‘Rome - the 1700’s - The Grand Tour’ Stuart Harvey Tuesday 10 March 2026 The Grand Tourists of the 1700s changed the art world. Rome was now filled with wealthy travellers, many from Britain, not only visiting the great works of art and architecture, but also looking for portraits, miniatures, mosaics and ancient sculptures to purchase for their family collections. This lecture will highlight some of the most famous visitors to Rome, including many artists who came to study, and will introduce some of the fascinating characters that catered to them in Rome, as we look at how the art world in Rome adapted to this lucrative new market. Car Parking - March Due to the building work going on at Dorking Halls, parking behind the Halls still remains slightly less extensive than usual, so please allow yourself plenty of time on Tuesday in case you have to park a little further afield. We will be there from around 6.30: the screening starts at 7.30 AND LOOKING FORWARD TO APRIL…. ‘Opium - Seduction, Greed, Art’ Amanda Herries Tuesday 14 April 2026 The source of the stuff of dreams, the poppy is a beautiful, fragile flower with immense power. Opium (from the greek ‘opion’ – poppy juice) is a hypnotic bringer of sleep, delightful lethargy and relief from pain. It is also highly addictive. Greed led to the introduction of this hugely desirable substance first to China, and then to Europe. The beguiling seduction of its effects led to its use to quieten troubled minds and calm agitated children and babies. Its use, often by those with troubled minds, led to the creation of great works of art in music, art and literature. Social and art history meet as this lecture unfolds. WE WISH YOU ALL A VERY ACTIVE, ARTISTIC, HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR FOR 2026 ‘Becoming Jane Austen: the Making of a Literary Superstar’ Annalie Talent Tuesday 13 January 2026 Jane Austen is one of our best-loved authors. Her novels have inspired countless stage and screen adaptations and even provided solace to soldiers in the trenches. She is the face of the £10 banknote, and she adorns tea towels and fridge magnets everywhere. Jane Austen is very famous indeed - but it was not always like this. She published anonymously and was unknown in her lifetime. There is no record on her gravestone that she was a writer and her books fell out of print shortly after her death. So just how did Jane Austen become the literary superstar she is today? This lecture will chart Jane Austen’s rise to fame; it will explore the makings of a literary celebrity and examine Austen’s legacy, 250 years after her birth. Car Parking - January Due to the building work going on at Dorking Halls, parking behind the Halls remains slightly less extensive than usual, so please allow yourself plenty of time on Tuesday in case you have to park a little further afield. Access to the Halls Please note also that access to the Halls (in and out) is VIA THE FRONT DOORS ONLY. This applies equally to wheelchair and walking-aid users. AND COMING IN FEBRUARY …. ‘The Art of the Automobile’ Roger Mendham Tuesday 10 February 2026 The earliest cars were purely functional and lacked even the most basic of passenger comforts, such as doors or even windscreens to protect passengers from the elements. However, progress was rapid and by the mid-1920s we entered a golden age of automobile design. A new generation of stylish cars were influenced by the art deco movement and the ‘Great Gatsby era’ included some of the most famous and fabulous cars ever built. This period was followed by the Streamline Moderne influenced cars of the 1930s and 40s, with aerodynamic shapes and lots of chrome detailing. This talk covers some of the most beautiful cars ever built, and focuses on the work of the coachbuilders, who were inspired by the art movements and created ‘mobile works of art’. LECTURE WITH LUNCH ‘Istanbul: City of Faith, Power and Beauty’ Dr Antonia Gatward Cevizli Wednesday 18th February 2026 Mickleham Village Hall The day will focus on the transformation of Istanbul from its conquest by Sultan Mehmet II, through to its Golden Age under Suleyman the Magnificent, and beyond. (Antonia delighted us with her lecture on Artmesia Gentileschi and other lesser known women artists of the 16th and 17th centuries, and we are delighted to welcome her back to talk on her other passion - the Ottomans) Lecture 1: To set the scene, the morning will focus on the conquest of Constantinople and the making of Istanbul. Lecture 2: Treasures of Ottoman Istanbul: Suleyman the Magnificent's era and beyond. Lecture 3 'Carnations, tulips and hyacinths': the story of Turkey's Iznik ceramics. In the afternoon, we visit All Saints’ Tudeley, which is famous for its Marc Chagall windows. COMMITTEE Would you like to join our committee? Members retire after three years. For full details, pick up a brochure today, or see the website To kick off the New Season… Our first lecture … Viking Gods & Valkyries: The Art of Norse Mythology James Vaux Tuesday 14 October 2025 This lecture explores how Norse myths and legends have been portrayed in the decorative and fine arts over more than 1,300 years and reveals quite how few depictions we have (some quite superb) and how varied they can be. In order to explain key themes in the artworks, the talk begins with a brief overview of the pantheon of deities, the Norse creation story and Ragnarök, the twilight of the gods. It then looks at Viking-age representations in wood, stone and metalwork, the effect of Christianisation, and 16th century manuscripts illustrating the Icelandic Eddas. It continues with 19th century paintings and sculpture created in a period of Scandinavian romantic nationalism, the appropriation of mythological images by the Nazi regime and more recent re-interpretations of Thor, Odin, Loki and the Valkyries in cartoon, Manga and film as well as conceptual art. Using these examples, the talk considers differences in material culture and worship patterns between Viking-age Scandinavia and the classical world, resulting in completely different legacies. It considers the lack of any stable imagery - which has led to Norse deities donning 16th century armour, rococo wigs, togas, space suits and even just birthday suits. The lecture concludes by revealing the five key reasons why we see the Viking gods so much in popular culture but almost never in the fine arts. And to follow ….. ‘O for the Wings of a Dove’ - the Life of a Cathedral Chorister by Roger Askew Tuesday 11 November 2025 (As this is Remembrance Day, we will observe a 2 minutes silence) Our rich cathedral choral tradition is unique. Our visit finishes with a traditional three-course Christmas lunch in a medieval banqueting room. Exhibition on Screen ‘Caravaggio’ Dorking Halls, 17 November, 7.30pm A film that explores the life and art of the painter Caravaggio, showcasing his masterpieces and delving into the mysteries surrounding his life and death. The film, which took five years to produce, features first-hand testimony from Caravaggio and examines his self-depictions in his works to reveal insights into his psyche. It highlights his unique artistic style, characterized by dramatic lighting, intense naturalism, and bold figures. The film aims to unravel the complexities of Caravaggio's life, including his struggles and the mysteries surrounding his disappearance. It explores how his paintings offer clues to understanding the man behind the art. TURNER AT PETWORTH - from June to November For the first time in 20 years, a wide range of JMW Turner’s artistic studies of the extraordinary landscape at Petworth House and Park will be exhibited in the very place that inspired him. Visitors will be able to discover more about his methods, and the impact Petworth had on Britain’s most celebrated artist. ‘Turner’s Vision at Petworth’ will include oil paintings and works on paper on loan from Tate and several private lenders. This range of objects gives a fascinating insight into Turner’s artistic approach, his experiments with colour and use of materials. They tell the story of his connection with the Petworth landscape, and with George O’Brien Wyndham, 3rd Earl of Egremont (1751-1837) who collected many of his works. In addition to the works on display in the exhibition, visitors will also be able to see the 20 oil paintings by Turner on permanent display in Petworth House. This exhibition is part of Turner 250, a year-long festival of special exhibitions and events, running from June through November, the programme celebrates 250 years since the birth of JMW Turner. May 2025 Tuesday 13th May at 10.30 am - in the Dorking Halls Douglas Skeggs ‘Prague: The City of the Winter Queen’ Prague has a rich history and Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia and residence of several Holy Roman Emperors. It was an important city to the Habsburg monarchy and Austria-Hungary. The city played major roles in the Bohemian and the Protestant Reformations, the Thirty Years' War, and in 20th-century history as the capital of Czechoslovakia between the World Wars and the post-war Communist era. Reduced to a near ruin under the Communists, it has been restored to its former glory, a unique blend of Gothic, Baroque and Art Nouveau architecture. We will look at the rich fabric of Prague's past, its legends and its history, as well as the artists, composers, statesmen and rogues that have illuminated this fairy tale city. APRIL 2025 E-NEWS April 2025 Tuesday 8th April at 10.30 am - in the Dorking Halls Dr Alison Barker ‘St George in England: A Visual Legacy’ Saint George is a revered figure in Christianity. His association with England dates back to the 14th Century, with King Edward III founding the Order of the Garter and making St George its patron. Following the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, St George’s Day, April 23rd. (possibly the date of his martyrdom), became one of the most important feast days in the English calendar. However, while revered as England’s patron saint, St George was not English, and some believe he may never have visited the country. Dr Baker will surely enlighten us on that! March 2025 Tuesday 11th March at 10.30 am - in the Dorking Halls Antonia Cevizli ‘Convent, Courts and Collections Women Artists of the 16th and 17th Centuries’ How many artists could you name? How many female artists could you name? In recent years one that has come to the fore is Artemisia Gentileschi. In the 1970s the feminist art historian Linda Nochlin published an article entitled "Why have there been no great Women Artists?" Her article suggested that oppressive institutions, not lack of talent, have prevented women from achieving the same level of recognition that men received. Nochlin said that studies on Artemisia and other women artists were "worth the effort" in "adding to our knowledge of women's achievement and of art history generally". Antonia will examine the obstacles they faced and steps taken to overcome them. DECEMBER 2024 Tuesday 10th December at 10.30 a.m. ‘Bruegel - The Seasons and the World’ Gavin Plumley In 1565, Pieter Bruegel the Elder was commissioned to create a series of paintings for a dining room in Antwerp. The images, charting the course of a year, changed the way we view the world through art. Landscape had previously been a decorative backdrop to dramas both sacred and profane, but in Bruegel's hands the landscape and our interaction with it became the focus. Looking at the paintings, The Return of the Herd, Hunters in the Snow and The Gloomy Day, this lecture explores how Bruegel pioneered a whole new way of thinking about the environment and our individual places within a shifting cosmos. Biography: Writer and broadcaster Gavin Plumley can be regularly heard on BBC Radio 3 and 4, and contributes to newspapers, magazines and opera and concert programmes. He lectures widely about the culture of Central Europe and has recently appeared in the documentary film Klimt and The Kiss. He has given talks at the Hay and Cheltenham Literature Festivals and for the Royal Opera House, National Gallery, National Trust, National Theatre, British Museum and V&A. Lecture Tuesday 11th June at 10.30 a.m. The Subtle Science & Extract of Colour in English Garden Design
Important: The Lecture will be held in the Denbies Suite at Denbies In 1882 Gertrude Jekyll wrote a short but seminal article in The Garden in which she urged the readers to 'remember that in a garden we are painting a picture'. As an accomplished watercolour artist, Miss Jekyll was familiar with the principles of using colours, but she felt that in gardens these principles 'had been greatly neglected'. This lecture looks at how to apply these principles to designing a border, but it also looks at the ways in which a border is different from a painting. However, it goes further than this and looks at how contemporary work, those of Turner, Monet, Rothko and Jackson Pollack evolved in parallel with ideas about what a garden or border should look like today. Lecture Tuesday 14th May at 10.30 a.m. Delacroix's Liberty Delacroix wrote to his brother, 'If I have not fought for the country, at least I will paint for her.' This lecture explores one particular painting, Liberty Leading the People, placing it at the heart of French Romanticism and looks at its powerful role in the aftermath of the July Revolution and its mixed critical reception. It also covers the historical background and the influences that led to the creation of Liberty and her compatriots on the barricades and asks why this icon of French revolutionary fervour continues to exert its fascination today. Lecture
Tuesday 9th April at 10.30 a.m.
Sun King & Versailles
For all the things that have been written about the great Sun King, Louis XIV, he is best remembered for the creation of Versailles; the immense chateau which he built on the site of his father’s old hunting lodge and which became the seat of French government, the setting for all grand court ceremonial and the envy of every other European monarch. This lecture will be an introduction to the sumptuous state apartments, the vast gardens and pleasure pavilions, the spectacular entertainments which took place both inside and out, the collections of the King and the whole etiquette of life at one of the greatest courts in Europe. Lecture Tuesday 13th February at 10.30 a.m. Through a Glass Darkly
Vermeer & the Camera Obscura The tranquil and meditative paintings of Johannes Vermeer are among the best-loved artworks in the world. Relatively little is known about the master from Delft, but that has not deterred a torrent of publications about him, both fictional and scholarly. One of the most hotly debated topics in Vermeer literature is his supposed use of the camera obscura. We will tackle this controversy head on by investigating the history of optical devices in art and examining the latest theories on Vermeer’s technique. It will be a great opportunity to look at Vermeer’s beguiling body of work afresh through a different lens. Wishing you all a Happy Christmas Lecture
Tuesday 12th December at 10.30 a.m.
A Bit of a Carry On: untold story of Peter Butterworth and Janet Brown
The remarkable untold story of Carry On actor Peter Butterworth, and his wife, Britain’s first female tv impressionist Janet Brown, best known for her impression of Mrs Thatcher. Using classic film and tv clips, personal mementos, and rare photographs and letters from his family’s unseen collection, Tyler reveals the private story behind his parents’ public lives. It’s a journey that takes in MI9, the building of a theatre in the notorious WW2 Prisoner of War camp Stalag Luft III, nights at Chequers with a Prime Minister, This Is Your Life, and many more moments in their long, shared life in the theatre. Annual General Meeting
Tuesday 11th July at 10.15 a.m. followed at 10.30 a.m. by the Lecture:
Disorder Restored: The Radical Side of Agatha Christie
Please note the earlier start time.
Agatha Christie is often dismissed as a writer of intriguing but lightweight novels which are no more literary than the average cryptic crossword. If her work is credited with any political meaning at all, it is seen as self-evidently reactionary and outmoded. This talk suggests that, looked at another way, the work can be read as exposing a disorder at the heart of polite society. Christie emerges as one of the twentieth century’s great chroniclers of political instability. Papers for July AGM

Lecture
Ship Burial at Sutton Hoo
Tuesday 13th June at 10.30 a.m.
The extraordinarily rich hoard found at Sutton Hoo dates to the early C7th and tells us a great deal about the wealth of the country at the time, inter-action with other cultures and status within Anglo-Saxon society. What we cannot yet prove is who was buried within the ship in the mound although the popular theory is that it was King Readwald of East Anglia. This lecture uses images of the treasures found as well as Old English poetry to discuss kingship and power in Anglo-Saxon England. Papers for July AGM

Painters in Paradise: visions of French Indo-china
Tuesday 9th May at 10.30 a.m. Old Saigon, elegant Hanoi, mystical Ha Long Bay ... these places captivated French artists of the 19th century colonial regime in Vietnam where they taught painting at the School of Fine Arts. Their sensual portraits and exotic landscapes evoked an idyllic world of gracious people with rich artistic traditions harking back to ancient civilisations. Imbuing their students with Western ideas, artists such as Alix Aymé, who revived lustrous lacquer work and silk painting, and Victor Tardieu, a pupil of Matisse, formed a generation of Vietnamese painters whose creative expression fused Eastern imagery with Paris Modernism. This lecture shows the historic background of Indochina, of ancient Hindu temples, Buddhist pagodas and Chinese style palaces, that was transformed by the addition of French architecture and culture. A new aesthetic emerged, depicted by French artists as paradisical and romantic, reflecting an era and a way of life that would vanish with war.

Do you like looking after other people's money? We have just the job for you. Due to our Treasurer stepping down, we are looking for someone to take up this position from July. This is an important role for the society; you will be working with a very friendly and helpful committee.
For more information please contact me: chairmantasd@gmail.com Amber Foundation
In line with the objects of The Arts Society to improve young people's access to the Arts, we have made a donation to the Amber Foundation, who support young people facing complex problems to transform their lives. The money will be used to enable them to work with a musician who has the skills to engage and motivate young people.
For more information on the Amber foundation click here
If you would like to further support the charity there is a Hike the Hill on Sunday 11th June 2023 at 9am for more information about this click here
Feedback After each lecture we send out an email asking for feedback. We very much appreciate you doing this.
Reception When you arrive at Dorking Halls, please, would you go to The Arts Society Dorking reception table and give your name. This is so that they know you are there. This is important to us so that we know how many people are attending the lecture.
We realise that sometimes it's not possible to arrive on time and give your name to reception. So that we know you have attended the lecture, we have a Latecomers form on the table outside the Hall. We would like you to sign this so we know you attended the lecture. It would be a great help to us.
Please remember that if bringing a guest, this is to be booked in advance. Please see the website for how to do this. Access Please note - Dorking Halls have asked me to emphasize that Members should use the front entrance to access Dorking Halls (the back door will be locked) so enough time should be left to park and make your way around the building. The back door is for staff and deliveries only. The café will be open.
Parking We've been advised that there are no other events at Dorking Halls on Tuesday that would have an additional impact on parking in the Dorking Halls car park. What's On
